Toshiba ultrabooks coming next week

Toshiba is preparing to ship its first ultrabook models in the shape of the Satellite Z830 for consumers and Portégé Z830 for business users, both of which offer a full-day battery life despite their slimline silhouette, according to the firm.

Due to go on sale next week, the two models have similar specifications, but the Portégé model supports Intel vPro technologies for corporate users, such as AMT for management and a trusted platform module security chip.

Like many other ultrabooks that have been announced, the new Satellite and Portégé are based on Intel's newest Core i3 and Core i5 processors, feature an ultra-slim design, and an SSD in place of a hard drive for better performance with power efficiency.

"Yes, it's tough to differentiate because Intel has set strict guidelines on what can be in an ultrabook," said Toshiba senior product manager, Tony Alderson.

However, he claimed that Toshiba's past experience of building thin and light laptops means it can deliver a better experience than rivals, with the two models featuring better connectivity and a better battery life than any model of the same thickness.

Both the Satellite Z830 and Portégé Z830 weigh less than 1.2kg and are just 8.3mm thick at the front of the system, broadening to 15.9mm at the rear.

This thickness is enough to squeeze in a full-size Ethernet port, while the new systems also have a USB 3.0 port, a further two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI and VGA outputs, SD Card reader slot and audio jack sockets.

Both also feature a magnesium alloy case and a 13.3in 1,366 x 768 display, and also have an internal battery.

While Alderson conceded that ultrabooks are largely just another type of laptop, he said these models are pushing the boundary of what can be achieved with current technology.

"We've had laptops this thin and light before, but not models that could deliver decent performance and a full eight hour battery life," he said, adding that there has been "considerable interest" in the new ultrabooks from potential buyers.

Pricing for the Satellite Z830 starts at £899 for 4GB memory and a 128GB SSD with Windows 7 Home Premium.

The Portégé Z830 costs £969 for the same specification with Windows 7 Professional. The Portégé will also be available with a Core i7 processor next year, Toshiba said.
